Falling in Love with the Remodeling Contractor

You

Paint-splattered

In navy cotton

Enter my living room

Like stars in a hurried sky

Flecked boots tracking chalky prints

Which I leave on the floors after you go

For two weeks

Your working stirs

Dust

As the neglected corner of my house

Becomes a palace under those thick

Animated hands

Zealous when smoothing walls

Or pointing at reason

Heralding a serious heart

That rockets out your mouth

Talking of your father’s first American job

I wonder

What hands lie beneath the

Mud and paint

What body draped by blue coverings

What hair buried under the flown powder of a day’s work
